New training for mental healthcare professionals.

We are excited to announce the launch of two new training support offers designed specifically for mental healthcare professionals, to enhance the knowledge and confidence of integrating physical activity discussions into your everyday practice.

A substantial body of evidence highlights that physical activity can play a role in alleviating symptoms of common mental health conditions. Regular engagement in physical activity not only fosters physical well-being but also provides significant mental and social benefits.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends physical activity as a component in treating depression across various severities.

We want to empower mental healthcare professionals to incorporate physical activity conversations into their clinical practice. Our research shows that physical activity is widely acknowledged as important in improving outcomes for people with common mental health conditions.

"99% of NHS Talking Therapies staff acknowledged physical activity was important in improving outcomes for people with common mental health conditions, while 12 out of 13 commissioners and 91% of service users strongly agree or agreed."

However, despite this acknowledgement, many professionals express a lack of confidence and knowledge in discussing physical activity during therapy sessions.

Additionally, barriers such as motivation, perceived costs, and a lack of awareness of local sports and physical activity provision often hinder effective conversations.

To address these challenges, we have developed two new training offers aimed at bolstering the skills, knowledge, and confidence of mental healthcare professionals in discussing physical activity with patients.

We hope these new training offers help transform the way the NHS approaches mental health treatment by integrating physical activity into conversation.
