Alliance Leisure has announced that planning permission has officially been granted for the extensive redevelopment of Fakenham Sports and Fitness Centre, marking a significant milestone in the town’s journey towards enhanced health and well-being facilities.

The project, led by North Norfolk District Council in partnership with Alliance Leisure and operated by Everyone Active, will transform the existing centre into a modern, inclusive, and accessible hub for sport and physical activity. The approved plans include the construction of a brand-new four-lane, 25-metre community swimming pool, a 55-station fitness suite and the refurbishment of existing studio spaces and changing areas.

The redevelopment is part of a broader vision to meet the growing demand for high-quality leisure facilities in Fakenham and the surrounding areas. The project has been made possible through a successful Levelling Up Fund bid submitted by the Council in 2022, with strong backing from Fakenham Town Council, local MPs, and over 1,000 residents who participated in public consultations.

The development will also involve the demolition of the existing pavilion to make way for the new facilities. While the 3G all-weather pitch will be submitted under a separate planning application, the current approval allows for immediate progress on the leisure centre and swimming pool.

Alliance Leisure, as the Council’s development partner, will oversee the delivery of the project through its UK Leisure Framework, which is owned by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd (DLL), ensuring the highest standards in design, sustainability and community engagement. The new facilities are expected to open to the public in late 2026.

This redevelopment not only addresses the long-standing need for a swimming pool in Fakenham, following the closure of the Fakenham Academy pool in 2014 but also reinforces the town’s commitment to promoting active lifestyles and community wellbeing.

The development team consists of architect Saunders Boston, contractor DDI Projects and project managers, Real Consulting.

Chris Ames, Business Development Manager at Alliance Leisure, adds: "We are proud to be partnering with North Norfolk District Council on this exciting project. Our goal is to create a modern, inclusive, and vibrant facility that meets the needs of the entire community. From swimming and fitness to social spaces, the new leisure centre will be a hub of activity and well-being for Fakenham for years to come."
