What it really takes to keep parkrun free.

Free, for everyone, forever. That was the promise when parkrun started in 2004, and it’s a promise that will never change.

Every weekend, a familiar miracle takes place. Hundreds of thousands of people walk, jog, run, and volunteer in their local outdoor space. Barcodes are scanned, milestone t-shirts are earned, results are processed, and by lunchtime, the space is returned to normal. To the casual observer, it looks delightfully simple.

It isn’t.

While parkrun is, and always will be, free to attend, delivering safe and accessible events for over 400,000 people every single weekend across the world requires a year-round, professional operation. As we reflect on International Day of Charity, we’re pulling back the curtain on the invisible machinery required to protect the movement you love.

The real cost of free: What keeps parkrun running.

It’s easy to assume that parkrun just happens, that a few cones are placed on a path, a volunteer clicks a stopwatch, and everyone goes for coffee afterwards.

The reality is that keeping parkrun free for everyone, forever, relies on heavy operational scale. If any part of this behind-the-scenes support stops, parkrun stops. Here is what it actually takes:

  • 100% emergency preparedness & incident response.

Every event must have full public liability insurance and an operational defibrillator on site. If someone collapses or a critical emergency arises, our 24/7 emergency incident response line is active to support volunteer teams through traumatic events. Beyond emergencies, dedicated safeguarding experts work daily to process weekly incident reports, protect children and vulnerable adults, and ensure every course remains safe.

  • Heavy digital & data infrastructure.

Processing results for over 200,000 parkrunners every weekend in the UK alone isn’t handled by a basic spreadsheet. It requires high-capacity tech infrastructure that enables us to record and publish your times across each event page, as well as managing the constant growth of these numbers – we had more than 750,000 new registrations in the UK alone in the last year. Maintaining these servers, protecting parkrunners’ data, and continually improving the parkrun app, including bringing ownership in-house to add new accessibility features, requires a huge cost.

  • A year of preparation before the first barcode is scanned.

New events don’t just appear. Our event delivery teams and ambassadors spend up to a year working on every new parkrun before its launch, navigating complex landowner permissions, conducting detailed safety assessments, securing start-up equipment, and training volunteer teams. Once live, our team works daily to maintain landowner relationships, replace worn-out kit, and support local event directors.

  • Targeted outreach where it’s needed most.

More than 20 million adults in the UK do not meet government guidelines for physical activity – we are constantly proving that we’re actively changing that trajectory. Between July 2025 and June 2026, we saw a year-on-year increase of more than 64,000 walkers at parkrun, with the average finish time across the UK increasing by 12 seconds. We refuse to be a charity that only serves people who are already active. To reach communities that stand to benefit the most, we fund specialised outreach: establishing parkruns inside custodial estates, running the parkrun practice scheme with thousands of GP surgeries, and sending outreach officers into local schools.

Because of this behind-the-scenes work, between July 2025 and June 2026, we supported:

How the charity is funded

To ensure parkrun stays free now and for generations to come, parkrun relies on:

  • Commercial partnerships: Aligned corporate partners who share our health and wellbeing mission.

  • Grants & foundations: Targeted funding to expand initiatives like junior parkrun in underserved areas.

  • The parkrun shop: Where 100% of profits are reinvested directly back into parkrun.

  • Fundraising & donations: Contributions from selfless parkrunners who chose to give back, take on their own challenges, and power the future in their own ways.

Keeping the magic alive.

Delivering a safe, welcoming morning, week after week requires constant care, technical expertise, and resources.

This International Day of Charity, every form of support helps safeguard our future. Whether you give your time as a volunteer, pick up a kit from the parkrun shop, take on a fundraising challenge, or set up a regular donation, you are keeping parkrun free, for everyone, forever.

Support the future of parkrun now.
