OVERVIEW

Sports, Health, and Well-being – A Nation’s Progress

The Royal College of Surgeons of England, London

12th March 2026

The Why Sports 2026 Conference marks a milestone in the journey of Why Sports, celebrating 10 years of uniting the sports, leisure, physical activity, and healthcare sectors to drive national well-being, economic prosperity, and social development.

As the UK continues to harness the power of sport and physical activity to shape a healthier and more active population, this landmark event will critically evaluate the progress made over the past decade while charting a bold and ambitious path for the next 10 years.

Reflecting on a Decade of Progress

Why Sports 2026 will assess the impact of key strategies and initiatives that have shaped the sector. The introduction of Sporting Future and Towards An Active Nation and more recently, Uniting the Movement and Get Active has significantly influenced policy, funding, and participation, shaping the way sport and physical activity are integrated into public life. The widely celebrated This Girl Can campaign has played a crucial role in breaking down barriers and increasing female participation in sports and physical activity, empowering countless women to become more active.

The progress made by mental health organisations has been instrumental in demonstrating the power of sport and activity in supporting mental well-being. Local government and national governing bodies have worked tirelessly to deliver community-driven physical activity initiatives, fostering stronger local engagement and participation. Additionally, active partnerships and collaborations with the health sector have been essential in integrating sport and healthcare, reinforcing the role of physical activity as a key component of public health strategies.

The Big Question: Has the Health of the Nation Improved?

Despite numerous achievements, fundamental questions remain. Have we made real progress in improving national health through sport and physical activity? Where have we succeeded, and where do gaps remain? What lessons can we learn from the past decade to inform future strategies? These are the pressing issues that will be addressed so the sector continues to evolve and deliver meaningful change.

Shaping the Next 10 Years

The Why Sports 2026 Conference will explore the future of the sector, addressing critical questions such as: What should be the key focus areas for the next decade? Where should investment be directed to achieve the greatest impact? How can the sector strengthen collaboration and innovation to drive meaningful change?

Through expert keynote speeches, panel discussions, and evidence-based presentations, Why Sports 2026 will provide a platform for thought leaders, policymakers, and practitioners to contribute to the next era of sector development. Together, we will set the course for a future where sport and physical activity continue to play a pivotal role in building a healthier, more prosperous, and socially connected nation.
