Members of Parliament, local authority and industry leaders, and key football stakeholders joined The Esswex FA at the Houses of Parliament for ‘A Celebration of Essex: Grassroots Football’s Social and Health Value’ reception on Tuesday, 11th November, to further highlight the power and impact the game has within local communities.

The event further highlighted the role Essex football plays, showcasing sector impact case studies facilitated by volunteer-run clubs for the benefit of those around them. Keynote speeches were delivered by co-host Andrew Rosindell MP (Member of Parliament for Romford), Brendan Walshe (Chief Executive Officer, Essex County FA), and Nigel Huddlestone MP (Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport).
MPs, County FA Directors, and staff welcomed representatives from governing bodies, charities, and non-profit organisations, as well as members of the media. State of Life, named advisors on the 2021 HM Treasury Wellbeing Guidance, were also present to amplify the benefits of the new Essex County FA ‘Social Value Estimator’ tool. This was alongside key professional, senior, and grassroots clubs, many of whom had recently benefited from their access to the facility.

Football’s contribution to the following sectors was celebrated: Social and Health Value, Mental and Physical Health Impact, Skills, Youth Leadership and Employability, Positive Diversionary Activity, Education and Schools, Facility Development and Funding, Sustainability and Environmental, Inclusion and Disability, Female Development and Engagement, Professional Clubs and Football in the Community, Non-League Football.
Brendan Walshe explained how delighted the Essex County FA were with the celebration and networking event: “Grassroots football in Essex continues to play a vital role in delivering significant and meaningful social and health value, as illustrated through our Social Value Estimator, supporting our vision of: “Creating a united #EssexFootball environment that tackles inequalities, delivers inspirational football opportunities and improves health For All.”
“The social impact of football across Essex is profound. Every week, more than 75,000 players take to the pitch, supported by thousands from a voluntary sector whose dedication strengthens communities, promotes healthier lifestyles, and creates lifelong connections through sport. We’re building on a period of remarkable growth, with participation increasing by 41% since 2018. Over 6,000 teams are now active, and this is projected to grow to more than 8,000 by 2032.”
“Working in collaboration with our stakeholders, there is a real opportunity to ensure the infrastructure of facilities, alongside a skilled workforce and participation pathways, are in place to meet this growth and to continue to deliver the social and health outcomes which are so valuable for our communities. We are excited about inspiring healthier lifestyles with preventative health system benefits, developing future leaders, and supporting economic vitality across Essex.”
Andrew Rosindell MP, who co-hosted the event with Julia Lopez, MP for Hornchurch and Upminster, was also enthusiastic about its success: “It was a real pleasure to partner with the Essex County Football Association to host this special event in the House of Commons, joined by colleagues from across the political spectrum, to celebrate the spirit of grassroots football in Essex. Local football has a unique power to bring people together, strengthening our communities.”
“It gives young people a true sense of belonging, teamwork, and pride. The commitment of volunteers, coaches, and families across Essex ensures that the game continues to flourish at every level. As the Member of Parliament for Romford, which, of course, proudly remains part of the historic county of Essex, I will always champion the incredible work being done to support grassroots sport and the positive difference it makes in lives throughout our wonderful county.”
Nigel Huddleston MP added: “It was a pleasure to speak at ‘A Celebration of Essex’ in Parliament and to recognise the huge contribution that grassroots football makes to our communities. The social value of the game is clear, from improving physical and mental health to building confidence and bringing people together. None of this would be possible without the incredible dedication of local volunteers, coaches, and players who make Essex football thrive.”
