On 12 March, professionals from across the physical activity, sport, and healthcare sectors gathered at The View at the Royal College of Surgeons, London, for the Why Sports 2026 Conference: Sports, Health and Well-being – A Nation’s Progress.

The event brought together a community united by a shared belief: that increasing participation in physical activity is one of the most powerful tools we have to improve the nation’s health and well-being.

With 265 registered attendees, the conference created a vibrant and purposeful environment. Leaders, practitioners, researchers, and innovators from organisations across the UK and around the world came together to exchange knowledge, challenge assumptions, and explore the role that sport and physical activity can play in addressing some of the most pressing health issues of our time.

A Shared Commitment to Progress.

From the outset, the atmosphere in the room was one of openness, collaboration, and determination. The conference managed to strike the right tone—bringing together people who genuinely care about improving the health of our communities and who are willing to work together to achieve that goal.

Throughout the day, expert speakers from leading organisations delivered informative and inspirational presentations, exploring the daily and societal challenges associated with inactivity. Their contributions highlighted both the scale of the challenge and the collective opportunity that exists when sectors work together.

While many positive developments were discussed, there was also a clear and honest recognition that the inactivity challenge remains complex. Understanding the barriers to participation—and identifying sustainable solutions that both encourage and maintain movement across the population—continues to demand innovation, collaboration, and long-term commitment.

Tackling the Challenge Together.

A recurring theme throughout the conference was the growing importance of national and local government strategiesin addressing inactivity and health inequalities. As disparities in health outcomes continue to rise across the UK, coordinated approaches that embed physical activity into everyday life are more important than ever.

Presentations and discussions covered a wide range of topics, including:

  • National physical activity strategies

  • Community development and engagement

  • Funding and investment opportunities

  • Measurement and evaluation

  • Long-term health conditions

  • Placemaking and active environments

  • Sports facility development

  • Youth crime and community resilience

  • The importance of green spaces

Through actionable case studies and real-world examples, speakers demonstrated how thoughtful collaboration between sectors—healthcare, local government, sport, community organisations, and the private sector—can create meaningful change within communities.

Learning, Developing and Connecting.

One of the most valuable aspects of the conference was the opportunity for attendees to connect with like-minded professionals, share experiences, and break down the silos that can often exist between sectors.

The discussions, networking, and shared insights throughout the day helped attendees develop greater awareness, new skills, and fresh perspectives on how to tackle the inactivity challenge within their own organisations and communities.

We hope that the knowledge shared and the conversations sparked during the conference will lead to stronger outcomes across communities, helping more people experience the physical, mental, and social benefits of an active lifestyle.

A Community Driving Change.

The commitment shown by everyone in attendance deserves to be recognised. The dedication of professionals working across the sport, physical activity, and health sectors continues to drive meaningful progress.

It is only through the support, expertise, and passion of this community that conferences of this scale and importance can take place. Your willingness to collaborate, share knowledge, and champion the cause of physical activity is what moves the sector forward.

Continuing the Conversation.

At Why Sports, we remain committed to uniting the sector, providing platforms for open discussion, and supporting the continued development of ideas that can help address the inactivity challenge facing the UK.

The Why Sports 2026 Conference demonstrated that while the challenges remain significant, there is also a strong, passionate, and capable community ready to tackle them together.

Progress is being made. The knowledge exists. The commitment is clear.

Now, we continue the work—together.
